Introduction into the session - Carin Fisher
I am Swedish but my life has been learning how to walk in Ethiopia, learning how to read and write in Lebanon, going to school in Afghanistan and finally working in Sweden, and now living part time in France and part time in Sweden.
This is a sort of a summery of this whole discussion because what I was lacking this morning was maybe a view outside of Europe. We have some very distinguished guests from outside of Europe but sometimes I think we talk about Europe and culture in Europe in a way we might exclude people and countries that are outside. Also taking into account that at present times in all of our countries there are people moving, migrating around the world and they too have to be included in our societies.
To quote the famous Polish reporter and writer, who recently passed away Ryszard Kapuscinsky, he says in one of his books each culture demands to be accepted and understood, and to understand you have to learn about it.
In my life I have in some way learned about other cultures; they are not something strange to me. I feel comfortable almost wherever I go. But this is also something what we have to learn to deal with on different levels within Europe and to have this contact.
To begin with I would like to welcome the very, very distinguished guest who will speak this afternoon. I am very happy that you are here and I am thrilled to hear what you are going to say
But first let me thank my dear friend Spyros and also convey thanks to the mayor of Athens, Mr. Kaklamanis for inviting us all here- I think it is fabulous to be back here. I have been here before and I have the very great pleasure of a tremendous welcome to Athens. I always feel that this is one of my homes. Definitely. So thank you.
